Dawson Spotlight: Rachael Stratmeyer

Have you met Ms. Rachael Stratmeyer yet? Ms. Stratmeyer is originally from Wisconsin. She earned her bachelor’s degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison and her master’s degree from the University of Virginia. In addition to teaching in Massachusetts, Northern Virginia, and the Netherlands, she also previously worked as a reading specialist and learning strategist. Currently, she teaches fourth grade and you can get to know her in this edition of the #DawsonSpotlight!
How long have you been a teacher?
This is my 18th year as a teacher.

What inspired you to become a teacher?
Growing up, I noticed how really good teachers helped students reach their full potential and not-so-good teachers could have the opposite effect. I think everyone should have the opportunity to become the best version of themselves, and I thought teaching was the best way to help facilitate that.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Dawson?
I like the feeling of community at Dawson; I also like that Dawson is a place that is constantly trying to improve.

What is one thing about you that would surprise students?
I participated in Milwaukee’s Polar Bear Plunge one New Year’s Day.  I went swimming in a very frigid Lake Michigan!

What helps you feel strong?
Being calm; I restore my strength with quiet activities: walking, running, practicing yoga, resting.

What does Stronger Together mean to you?
Stronger Together makes me think of a very thick rope. When we are all working together we can hold a very heavy load--even if a few strands fray.

What are you most proud of?
My mom likes to say that happiness is a choice. I’m proud of the times that I’ve altered my perspective in order to improve an experience.

Do you have any career highlights that you’d like to note and share with our community?
One year, when I taught in northern VA, I got to take my kindergarten class to the White House Easter Egg Roll!

Thank you for sitting in the spotlight, Rachael!
