Teacher Spotlight: Matt Reynolds

Have you met Mr. Matt Reynolds?  He has been in education for almost 20 years, and previously, he taught 7-12 mathematics in New York, where he ran an accelerated junior high program.  He was also a reading specialist in Las Vegas before returning to the classroom at Dawson.  Currently, he teaches pre-algebra, algebra and advisory.  Learn more about Mr. Reynolds in this edition of Teacher Spotlight!
How long have you been a teacher?
I have been in the classroom for 10 years, but have been in education for closer to 20 years.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Dawson?
My favorite thing about teaching at Dawson is the level of enthusiasm the students have toward learning new things.

What is your biggest goal for this school year?
I always tell my students that my ultimate goal as a teacher is to have my class be their hardest and favorite class.  I’m constantly focusing on improving students' problem-solving skills. Providing students with a “toolbox” of strategies for attacking a wide range of problems is also a huge goal.

How did you discover your own Brave Voice?
Ms. Barber, my first-grade teacher, played a key early role in the development of my Brave Voice.  Many of my students have heard the story of how she made my first day at a new school memorable in the worst way.  Ever since that day, I’ve tried my best to use my voice to make others feel valued and appreciated.

What is one thing about you that would surprise your students?
That is a tough one, considering I’ve shared quite a few surprising stories with them.  I guess I would say the fact that in my early 20s, I actually dyed my hair bleach blonde for a time.  I was the Eminem of the math department!

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t working?
Especially this time of year, I LOVE to spend the weekend watching sports.  This is despite the fact that I’m a Chicago Bears fan, so the weekend invariably ends in sadness.

What are you most proud of?
In my professional career, I would say I am most proud of all my students that I’ve convinced to take risks and have confidence in themselves.  Personally, I am most proud of my two sisters, one whom earned her doctorate from UCLA, and the other has a beautiful family with two adorably sweet children I get to spoil!
