Teacher Spotlight: Lyndell Lewis

Have you met Mr. Lyndell Lewis?  He has been an educator for 27 years and previously taught in Louisiana, Oregon, and Michigan before joining the Dawson community.  Currently, Mr. Lewis teaches eighth-grade algebra, advanced algebra/introduction to geometry, insights, and advisory.  Find out more about him in this edition of Teacher Spotlight!
How long have you been a teacher?
Twenty-seven years. I’ve taught in Louisiana, Oregon, Nevada and Michigan.

What’s your favorite thing about teaching at Dawson?
My team!  I love working with the eighth-grade team - Ellis, Lindley, and Boyum!  We are a well-oiled machine!  I also love the fact that I’m able to actually teach and know that my administration trusts me and supports me.

What is your biggest goal for this school year?
To continue helping kids learn how to become independent thinkers.

How did you discover your own Brave Voice?
I was taught when I was very young to speak my mind. Growing up in the South taught me a lot about fighting for the rights of not only myself but for others as well. In my early years of teaching, I learned that I was the only positive voice some of my students encountered, so I had to be brave and speak for them as well.

What is one thing about you that would surprise your students?
I think my students know everything about me.  I’m an open book.

What is your favorite thing to do when you aren’t working?
I am a numbers person, so I love betting on sports. I love calculating the numbers.

What are you most proud of?
Being a great father!!  I am far from perfect, but my family knows that I am there for them.
