What is the Dawson First Fund?

The Alexander Dawson School at Rainbow Mountain is one of only two not-for-profit, non-sectarian, independent schools in southern Nevada. As is the case for all non-profit schools, full tuition does not cover the entire cost of educating a child. Every year, we face a “financial gap”, the difference between tuition and the actual cost of hiring and retaining extraordinary faculty, offering innovative programs and curriculum, and providing financial aid to families in need. This gap must be bridged through fundraising efforts; Dawson depends on the support of families and organizations that understand the importance of donations to any community social service program, including medical organizations, child support services, and education.

WHAT IS THE DAWSON FIRST FUND?
The Dawson First Fund is our annual fundraising campaign in support of our tuition gap. Every dollar collected from the Dawson First Fund ensures our children receive the best education in southern Nevada. Our goal is very important to the long-term sustainability of the School: 100 percent participation. In order to get outside financial support from philanthropists and businesses, it is critical that we show close to 100 percent support from our own families and faculty. Donors want to know our Dawson community values education as much as they do. The amount of the gift is not as important as the gift itself. Give what you are capable of giving, whatever the amount.

  • Why should I support the Dawson First Fund?

Your support of the Dawson First Fund helps supplement the difference between tuition and the actual cost of educating a Dawson student. Help us ensure Dawson remains the best school in Las Vegas by making a gift to the First Fund.
  • Is the concept of giving unique to Dawson?

No. Independent schools across the country rely on the generosity of their constituents to enhance their children’s educational experiences. In order to maintain our academic independence, local and federal governments do not provide subsidies to independent schools.
  • How does my child benefit when we donate money to the school?

Modeling generosity and caring for each other are important Dawson Core Beliefs. Our entire community is stronger when we ensure that extraordinary primary education is available to as many students as possible. Additionally, to get outside financial support from philanthropists and businesses, it is critical that we show close to 100 percent support from our own families and faculty. Donors want to know our Dawson community values education as much as they do. The amount of the gift is not as important as the gift itself. Give what you are capable of giving, whatever the amount.
  • For what kinds of things is my donation being used?

    • Student learning opportunities include support for our performing arts program, enhanced cultural experiences, authors and artists in residence, and guest speakers on curriculum-related topics.
    • Teacher development includes a professional development allowance for each teacher, a robust Teacher Academy program, and funding for our important curriculum innovation and design fund.
    • Financial aid helps us create and maintain the diverse student population we value at Dawson. About 20 percent of Dawson families receive partial tuition support. Additionally, several students receive merit-based scholarships, which are also need-based, to fulfill our commitment to continually raise the value of the Dawson educational experience.
  • Are donations tax-deductible?

Yes, Dawson is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and all cash, securities or in-kind contributions are tax deductible.
  • How much should I contribute?

We know everyone's budget is different and you should base your decision on your charitable interests and your financial capacity. No gift is too small; rather, our goal is to have 100 percent participation in the campaign to demonstrate a strong level of support for our students and our School. It's your participation in the campaign that matters!
  • How can I make a gift?

  • What is a leadership gift?

Leadership giving provides a signal to all other donors that an Alexander Dawson School education is a valuable resource in our community. A leadership gift is a large donation made by a single person, a small set of people, or a foundation that inspires others to contribute and participate. The New York Times characterized the importance of leadership gifts this way: “When a big (leadership giver) comes in, the smaller donors pay attention. It legitimizes a fund-raising project and the institution.”

Dawson has established the Dawson First Society, a leadership club comprised of all leading donors. This membership club is designed to recognize our top contributors and inspire other donors. All donors at the Diamond Circle level and above are automatically made members of the Dawson First Society.
