Have you met Ms. Kym Newell yet? Kym Newell is from Carson, California, where she got her start in the field of education. She attended El Camino College, UC Berkeley & Nevada State College. Currently, she is a middle school advisor, teacher, and learning support specialist. You can learn more about her in this edition of the #DawsonSpotlight!
How long have you been a teacher/employee at Dawson?
I am currently in my 14th year at Dawson

What inspired you to become a teacher/educator?
I actually didn’t know I wanted to be a teacher until I started working with children at a gifted school in Los Angeles and fell in love with the idea of helping students one day at a time.

What’s your favorite thing about working at Dawson?
What is my favorite thing about working at Dawson? There are so many things to love about Dawson. I love the feeling of being appreciated and part of a family. I also love working with such great children who inspire me to be a better teacher each day.

What is one thing about you that would surprise students?
I did tap, ballet, and jazz for 15 years along with modeling for 10 years

What helps you feel strong?
I feel strong when I am surrounded by those people who hold me up when I am down, hold me accountable and hold my hand when I need assistance.  I also feel strong when I can see that I am making a small difference in a child’s life, the strength I give them is my strength from within.

What does Stronger Together mean to you?
To me, Stronger Together has so many meanings. It means coming together to help others, while also allowing others to be your strength. It is like each person is an individual branch, but when we all come together, planted and standing firm, we are a strong tree. Stronger doesn’t have to mean physical strength it can mean so much more.

What are you most proud of?
I am most proud of my family. They mean everything to me.

Do you have any career highlights that you’d like to note and share with our community?
I have been in the education field for 21 years. Attended multiple Language and Math trainings and participated in the NAIS/POCC conference for 5 years.

Thank you for sitting in the spotlight, Kym!
