Middle School's Global Marketplace & Media Literacy Partnership

Dawson's sixth-grade Middle School students from both Media Literacy (Media Lit) and Global Marketplace (Glo-Mar) classes partnered together over a two-week period to create, market, and promote a new business venture.  The culminating event was today's Global Marketplace Expo, which took place in the Library.

Over the course of this semester, Media Lit students were given the opportunity to study the different forms of media which they are exposed to daily (from television and internet, to radio and billboards), and learned to interpret both healthy and unhealthy images in media messages, as well as acquire a deeper understanding on how consumers are effected by media images and marketing.  Students in the Glo-Mar class spent this semester learning the ins and outs of creating and starting a business as an entrepreneur, including business plans, marketplace trends, budgeting, and marketing.

For the last two weeks, students from both classes worked together: Glo-Mar students worked on the creation of the business and/or product, and the Media Lit students helped each business produce positive media messages in their advertisements and promotions.  The resulting teamwork and effort was on proud display at today's successful Global Marketplace Investment Expo. Dawson parents, faculty, and students were in attendance as "investors," listening to business pitches and deciding in which businesses they wanted to invest their (fake) money.
