Math Ed. Professor, Dr. Jeffrey Shih, Presents to Dawson Parents

Thank you to Dr. Jeffrey Shih, Dawson parent and Associate Professor of Mathematics Education at UNLV, for speaking at today’s Parents as Partners Math Session.

In this interactive meeting, Dr. Shih shared valuable information about the research-based approach to the teaching and learning of mathematics "with understanding." Teaching for understanding is generally defined as "a shift from an emphasis on knowledge acquisition for its own sake to preparing learners to understand ideas and processes that they can use and apply flexibly and autonomously."*

As part of this two-hour presentation, more than 40 Dawson parents solved math problems while Dr. Shih shared research about the solution strategies to those problems.

Dr. Shih said, “It was nice to give parents the opportunity to be learners and to understand how the teaching of math is different now.  While procedural skills are important, I hope parents see the possibilities if there is an early emphasis on teaching for understanding too.”
