Dawson Students Win Recycled Art Award

The Alexander Dawson School is proud to announce that our seventh-grade Visual Arts students received first place in the statewide 2015 Nevada Recycled Art Contest. Their wall sculpture, entitled “The Magpie Weave,” was crafted from plastic fencing, wire, rope, tinsel, LED lights, ribbon, caution tape, fabric, yarn, and cable ties.

Ms. Chantelle Cook, Dawson’s Lower and Middle School art instructor, explained the students’ inspiration and creative process.

“For this competition, our seventh-grade students decided to collaborate on a large-scale weaving that incorporated recycled and reused items. They worked together to create an original design, collected the recycled items, and spent many hours piecing it together. What I appreciate most is that, through this process, our students came to understand how art is used to educate and inform our community about current issues, such as the importance of recycling to the environment. It was inspiring to see these student artists implement technology, flawless craftsmanship, collaboration, and education into their art."

The Nevada Recycled Art Contest, sponsored by Nevada Recycles and the Las Vegas Sands Corporation, was created to encourage Nevadans to reduce, reuse, and recycle as well as highlight how creativity can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfills.
