Dawson Middle School Student Wins Journalism Award

The Alexander Dawson School is proud to announce that seventh-grade student Sofia Morris received an honorable mention award in the inaugural Journalism Education Association’s Middle School National Media Contest.

Sofia’s story, entitled Knights at Dawson: Guarding the Middle School Halls, was originally written as a Bear Reporters class assignment. Ms. Jolie Lindley, a Dawson language arts teacher, was impressed with her story and decided to enter it into the contest.

“I entered Sofia's story in the news-feature writing category, where she earned an honorable mention. The critique judge called her story "clever and creative" and praised her use of repetition to achieve a rhythm in the opening and draw the reader into the story.”

The contest received entries from 22 schools in nine states and the United Kingdom. In total, 27 Superior, 74 Excellent and 82 Honorable Mention awards were awarded.

Journalism Education Association (JEA) is the largest national association for journalism teachers in the United States. Each year, the association co-sponsors two national conventions/workshop sessions with National Scholastic Press Association for high school and middle school students.
